The invention relates to a control device for automatically defrosting an evaporator, which is connected, with a condenser, in the coolant circuit of a heat pump. In this case, a sensor is provided for detecting icing of the evaporator and a control device is provided which is controlled by the sensor and switches on a defrosting device in the event of icing. In order to make it possible in this case to detect a layer on the evaporator without using mechanically moving switching means, a ventilator is provided which is driven by an electric motor and whose airflow acts on the evaporator. In addition, a limiting-current switch is connected to the supply circuit of the motor and switches on the defrosting device when a predetermined deviation from the operating current intensity in the supply circuit of the motor occurs.
