In continuously operating carrier electrophoresis (Offenlegungsschrift 2,840,614), the carrier medium is moved in an electric field relative to a sample-feeding apparatus. The particles to be separated are applied in a fixed location to a point of the carrier medium, so that the carrier moves past the feeding apparatus. The particles to be separated move, on the one hand, in the direction of the electric field and are, on the other hand, taken along with the carrier medium. This results in a two-dimensional separation which is exploited for continuous running of the apparatus. A great difficulty in this method is the sample feeding. This difficulty is overcome by pumping the sample continuously into a small tube which is open towards both sides and which is placed vertically upon the carrier medium. The sample is then drawn into the carrier medium with the aid of an electric field. This apparatus has the advantage that the samples can be fed continuously and controllably. In addition, it is ensured that the sample is applied to the carrier medium within a limited area which is as small as possible.
