Lubricating oils containing one or more C10-C30alkane-1,2-diols of formula <IMAGE> where R is a C8-28alkyl group, have been found to reduce fuel consumption in an internal combustion engine when employed therein as a crankcase lubricant. The diol, or mixture of diols, can be present in the lubricating oil in an amount of from 0.1 to 5 weight percent, based on the total weight. |
