PURPOSE:To discriminate a printing type character from a handwriting character, by utilizing the fact that irregularities in height are larger in the handwriting character when it is compared with the printing type character. CONSTITUTION:A counter 21 calculates a black picture element at every scanning line, and stores the fact that its number has exceeded a constant value, in an address controller 22. The device 33 drives an output controller 23 and a character-string extracting device 24, and also sends out an address signal Sc. The device 24 accumulates once information S1 corresponding to a character line from the controller 23, scans it in the subscanning direction, and extracts a black picture element string in order. In case when this black picture element string has continued exceeding a constant number, a character area extracting device 25 decides that the black picture element string belongs to a characer area, and outputs the largest one of said black picture element strings, as height Hi of its character area. An operating device 26 makes each height Hi and address signal, operates sigmaH/muH, and a deciding device 27 compares an output of the device 26 with a threshold level Th, and sends out a character kind signal S0. |
