The subject matter of the invention is a device for guiding an ink ribbon (3) in typewriters or similar machines in the region of the printing point (5) in front of the platen (7). By means of their guide surface (14), the guide pieces (4) serve, on the one hand, for deflecting the ink ribbon (3) coming from the cartridge (1) and running back to it. To compensate for changes in length at the edges of the ink ribbon (3), the guide pieces (4) are, on the other hand, mounted pivotably on the arms (8) of the lifting device. The guide pieces (4) thus pivot in dependence on the stroke height of the lifting device. As a result, the ink ribbon (3) remains evenly tensioned. Tabs (17) moulded onto the guide pieces (4) have the purpose of keeping the ink ribbon (3) away from the range of rotation of the type carrier (6). <IMAGE>
