In the process for electrodepositing an alloy coating on a metal object, in particular a zinc/nickel alloy coating on steel strip, the electrodeposition of the alloy coating is preceded by an intense electroless pretreatment of the metal object with the electrolyte in order first to deposit a zinc/nickel-containing thin primary layer so that the actual electrolytic zinc/nickel coating takes place on said primary layer. So that the alloy coating is deposited with a desired constant percentage composition, use is made of separate anodes which each contain only one alloy element and which are connected to separate electrical circuits in order to control the current at the anodes containing different alloy elements separately.
