in which R1 = H, lower alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R2 = H, lower alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkoxy or halogen, R3 = H or lower alkyl and n = 0 or 1, are prepared by reaction of a phenylhydrazine of the general formula II

with an oxacycloalkan-2-ol of the general formula IIIa, IIIb or IIIc

in which R4 = lower alkyl or acyl, R5 = lower alkyl, R6 = H or methyl, k = 0, 1 or 2, l = 1 or 2 and m = 2, 3 or 4, in an alcoholic solvent in the presence of a strong acid, the strong acid being present in an amount which is necessary in order to convert at least 1 mol of the phenylhydrazine into a salt with the strong acid per 1 mol of the oxacycloalkan-2-ol employed.
