The present invention concerns the technique of electric-arc treatment and relates in particular to an apparatus for the electric-arc treatment of elongated workpieces. The apparatus for electric-arc treatment according to the invention contains an electrode (1) which is accommodated at a predetermined distance from the workpiece (2) in a vacuum chamber (9) which has an inlet opening (10) and an outlet opening (11), a feed source (3) for the arc, and a component for changing the direction of movement of the workpiece. The inlet opening (10) and the outlet opening (11) of the vacuum chamber (9) and the component for changing the direction of movement of the workpiece are arranged on different sides of a plane which runs perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece (2) and intersects the burning zone of the arc (4). The invention can be used for cleaning burr and lubricants from workpieces such as wire or strip in a highly effective manner and for refining the metal surface layer of these workpieces. <IMAGE>
