In the case of overvoltage protection circuit for electrical systems, especially for electronic measurement, control and regulating systems, having a voltage-dependent resistor, especially a varistor, the current surges and voltage spikes which occur on pairs of wires in the event of atmospheric disturbances being limited, in order that said current surges or voltage spikes which occur on pairs of wires in the event of atmospheric disturbances are limited to values which are safe for electrical loads, it being ensured at the same time however, that the operating voltage does not fall below the value necessary to maintain the operation of the electrical apparatus in the event of any disturbance, it is proposed that a varistor (V1) be connected between the two wires (a, b) of a cable and that the two wires (a, b) be connected to chassis or to earth (E) via in each case one further varistor (V2 or V3 respectively). <IMAGE>
