A surface and panel planer is described which has a top work guide into which a rotating cutter block projects as well as a second work guide which lies below the cutter block and through which workpieces can be passed via belt-driven feed rollers for thicknessing. In the novel embodiment, the cutter block is mounted in a tunnel-shaped top housing part which is detachably mounted on a bottom housing part in which the feed rollers and the second work guide in the form of a vertically adjustable guide table are arranged. The drive for the cutter block as well as for the feed rollers is effected via belt drives separate from one another, so that the novel embodiment can be formed as a very simple and transportable unit which is either used on its own and for this purpose can be given a separate drive motor or can be combined with a motor-driven saw unit which then takes over the drive. Depending on the type of use, surfacing or panelling work can then be carried out.
