In typewriters and similar machines with a motor which can be driven incrementally in order to position the printing unit (1), it is possible to position the printing unit in fine increments and thus to print characters outside the normal character spacing. Storing in a data memory (12) the fine-increment position in association with the respectively printed character permits the exact position of the character to be detected automatically when repositioning, for example for the purpose of deleting characters, and permits the printing unit also to be set exactly to characters which are printed outside the normal character spacing. <IMAGE>
