Polyacrylamide useful as a high- molecular-weight, water-soluble cationic flocculant, is produced by polymerizing acrylamide which is substantially free from N-acryloyl acrylamide with a minor amount of cationic monomer. Crude acrylamide is preferably obtained by catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile with water in the presence of a metallic copper catalyst at a pH in the range of from 4 to 10, and then rendered substantially free from N-acryloyl acrylamide by physical adsorption, reactive adsorption, decomposition by a chemical reaction or a solvent extraction. |
