The invention relates to an optical device for comparing and measuring the size and shape of samples, which has a scale plate in the outer rim region of a field stop, or is configured such that an image of the scale plate is projected into the outer rim region of a field stop, and which has an optical system for illuminating the scale plate in order to make a bright scale available next to the image of a sample to be investigated. The illuminating system can have a filter or a stop for reducing the quantity of illuminating light or to switch off the illumination entirely, and it can additionally have moving mirrors which can superimpose the scale on the image of the sample if required. <IMAGE>
