PURPOSE:To recognize a character at a high speed without causing a read error due to lack of a stroke, by executing the discrimination containing an undefined subpattern and a feature matrix only in case when 2 kinds or more of proposed similar characters have been obtained. CONSTITUTION:In an undefined subpattern USP extracting part 9, a USP is extracted by a black bit which does not belong to all subpatterns, among black bits stored in a pattern register 3. In a a feature matrix extracting part 12, a character frame area on each subpattern register is split into areas of (NXM) by coordinates of a split point decided by a character frame split deciding part 11, the number of black bits in each area is counted, a feature showing the length of a character line is calculated by use of line width W, and a feature matrix of (NXM)X4 demensions is generated. A USP feature matrix extracting part 13 generates a feature matrix of (NXM)X1 dimension as to the USP by the same operation as the extracting part 12. IN this way, the character can be recognized at a high speed by means of discrimination containing the undefined subpattern and the feature matrix. |
