PURPOSE:To heighten the polymer yield per unit catalyst, by effecting a prepolymerization by contacting an alpha-olefin with a specified solid catalytic component, an organic Al compound and an organic acid ester and then effecting the main polymerization in the presence of the prepolymerizate. CONSTITUTION:The following components are mixed: (A) solid catalytic component prepared by reacting a reaction product between an aluminum halide and an organosilicon compound of formulaI, wherein R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-8C alkyl or a like group and n is 0-3, with a compound of formula II, wherein R<3> is a 1-8C alkyl and X is a halogen, and then treating the resulting product with both a titanium tetrahalide and an organic acid ester, (B) organic Al compound of formula III, wherein R<4> is a 2-6C alkyl and (C) organic acid ester. Then, an alpha-olefin is prepolymerized by contacting it with the above-prepared mixture at a temperature <=40 deg.C and then effecting the main polymerization of the alpha-olefin at a temperature >=40 deg.C in the presence of the prepolymerizate. Thus, the polymer is obtained in good yields.
