Plastics mouldings are reinforced in zones to be subjected to peak stresses in service by partial inclusions of relatively strong inserts made by pultrusion. Pref. the pultruded inserts are of fibres impregnated with thermosetting polyester or epoxy resin, or with a thermoplastic polyamide or polyester, superficially compatible with the other moulding materials. For mfr. of vehicle bumpers etc. where the plane or concave external bar is braced by pultruded inserts at anchorage points about which the bar may be pivotted under impact. Claimed for local strengthening of mouldings made from expanded polyurethanes, polystyrenes or polyolefins, esp. where the moulded profile is not of constant section and service stresses are flexural and/or torsional. Pref. the insert section is undercut to provide an interlocking anchorage for the overmoulded matl.. Opt. the insert may link and support two parallel superficial profiles.
|
