Each flexible petal carries three characters corresponding to a triple fount with upright, italic and small-capital character sets. Letters requiring accentuation are formed by double impression using accents arranged separately at two levels to accommodate alternative letter sizes. The upright and italic 'i' are undotted to allow for imposition of a circumflex accent. The thickness of letters is variable by a programmed escapement in min. steps of 1/120 inch (0.21mm). The position code for each accent is stored in memory to ensure exact centring above the next-printed letter, whatever its thickness. The degree sign is provided in superior and inferior positions and, like the digits 1 (superior) and 2 (inferior), can be used in conjunction with the oblique stroke.
|
