The invention relates to an exterior rear view mirror for motor vehicles which is mounted in a housing which leaves the mirror surface free, the mirror being adjustable and, so that precipitation on the mirror surface can be removed quickly and at least to such a degree that the view through the mirror is not longer adversely affected, is constructed in such a way that the mirror is assigned at least one wiper which engages with its wiper blade over the mirror surface and is guided with its blade holder on the mirror surface and is guided behind said surface with the aid of a single or a double belt which forms the power take-off of a gear which is mounted in the mirror housing together with an electric drive motor.
