A lifting device has a hook (2) and a locking mechanism (3). The task of the locking mechanism (3) is to close the hook opening in one position in order to thereby counteract unintentional release of a coupling member (5) from the hook and to clear the hook opening in another position, specifically by means of an actuating member (6) which is mounted on the locking mechanism (3) and which can be disengaged from a stop (9') on the suspension eye (10) of the hook by the coupling member (5).
