PURPOSE:To prevent sodium silicate from aging and to carry out the operation effectively, by forming the upper part of an electrolytic cell insulating partition of an impermeable plate and the lower part thereof of a permeable plate, and loading sodium silicate to a level slightly higher than the permeable plate. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell 10 is divided into an anode chamber 18 and a cathode chamber 20 by the insulating partition 16 the upper half of which is made of an acrylate plate 12 and the lower half of which is made of an asbestos plate 14. In the anode chamber 18, a carbon rod anode 22 is positioned in parallel with the partition 16 and away therefrom about 1mm., and in the cathode chamber 20, an iron mesh cathode 24 is positioned in parallel with the partition 16 and away therefrom about 1mm.. Sodium silicate 26 is loaded into the cathode chamber 20 to a level about 5mm. higher than the top of the asbestos plate 14. Brine is charged into the anode chamber 18, and a caustic soda solution is introduced over the sodium silicate in the cathode chamber 20. In this state, when electrolysis is carried out, caustic soda having a concentration of approximately 60% accumulates in the cathode chamber 20. |
