The invention relates to a liquid-crystal display which is illuminated transmissibly by a light source (11) and is intended to represent symbols which are to be constantly displayed and variable symbols. It has a liquid-crystal cell which is filled with liquid-crystal substance (1) and consists of two substrates (2, 3) which are arranged at a distance from one another and on the sides of which facing one another electrodes (8, 9, 9') are arranged. A front and a rear polariser (7, 10) are arranged on the outsides of the substrates (2, 3). One polariser (10) has a cut-out (12) in the region of the symbols to be constantly displayed, so as to achieve a simple and cost-effective design of the liquid-crystal display. <IMAGE>
