Method for generating a fluidised bed having particle sizes which essentially decrease with increasing fluidised-bed height, fluidised-bed mass regulation by recycling discharged material, introducing fresh material and by drawing off material, the horizontal cross-section of the fluidised bed being modified by shaping actions from outside from the bottom upwards, from a zone having the largest cross-section via a zone having a continuously decreasing cross-section into a zone having the smallest cross-section, the particle-interstice volume ratio ( epsilon ) changing from a value epsilon = 0.45 - 0.75 in the zone of the largest cross-section to a value epsilon = 0.75 - 1.00 in the zone of the smallest cross-section. <IMAGE>
