In a fluidised-bed container (10), an essentially horizontal, disc-shaped rotor (28) is arranged between an air chamber (24) situated below it and a working chamber (26) situated above it and can be rotationally driven about an at least approximately vertical axis. Arranged around the rotor (28) there is an annular closure member (42) whose height is adjustable, which in a lower position clears an annular gap (62), but in an upper position seals the annular gap (62), and, with its top side (52), forms a smooth transition between the top side (50) of the rotor (28) and an upper wall zone (54) of the fluidised-bed container (10). The rotational speed of the rotor (28) can be varied in accordance with the quality of the material to be treated and the type of the treatment process, almost at will and largely independent of the gap width, without incurring the risk of excessively forceful impingement of the material on the wall of the fluidised-bed container (10). The fluidised-bed apparatus can be employed for granulating, but equally readily for pelletising and/or encapsulating granulated material. <IMAGE>
