Process for the preparation of 24,25-dihydroxy cholesterol, characterised in that desmosterol in the pure state or mixed with other natural sterols is subjected to a reaction of acetylation, then the resulting reaction mixture is treated in acetic acid with iodine in the presence of potassium iodate, and the excess of iodine is destroyed, in that the reaction product is extracted and the organic solution is dry-evaporated, in that the resulting residue is subjected to a chromatography or to a fractional crystallization and finally in that the 3 beta,24-diacetoxy-25-hydroxy-5-cholestane is hydrolyzed by a basic alcoholic solution.
