<p>Fully cured scrap rubber is chopped and then granulated, after which the granules are mixed with granulated thermoplastics material by a mixing operation vigorous enough to raise appreciably the temperature of the materials being mixed. The resultant hot mass is formed into a slab which after being allowed to cool is granulated to produce a material capable of being extruded or injection moulded. The substance of the invention can be used for making any articles which can be extruded or moulded from unvulcanized rubber and possesses a degree of rigidity higher than is obtainable by the use of unvulcanized rubber alone. The invention solves the problem of providing a mouldable compound from scrap rubber which has already been vulcanized and which would in consequence be otherwise impossible to remould.</p> |
