N-formyl-N-phosphonomethylglycine and esters thereof having the formula <CHEM> wherein R is hydrogen or C1-5 alkyl; Z1 is XR1 or NR3R4; Z2 is YR2 or NR3R4; X and Y are independently oxygen or sulfur; R1 is hydrogen, C1-5 alkyl or phenyl; R2 is hydrogen, C1-5 alkyl or phenyl; R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen or C1-5 alkyl; provided that R1 may not be phenyl when R2 is methyl and X and Y are oxygen and provided that R1 may not be methyl when Z2 is N-(C2H5)2, have been found to be effective herbicides, especially when applied to emerged plants.
