Apparatus for cleaning sediment from basins comprises a suction system (18, 22, 24) that transfers particulate- laden liquid from the bottom of a basin (16) to a first vessel (A) where primary settling of the particulate can occur. A second pump (28) transfers particulate laden liquid from vessel (A) through a primary, e.g. hydroclonic, separator (34) for primary separation of particulate matter. The discharge of effluvia of the primary separator is conducted to a second vessel (B). A third pump (50) transfers liquid from the second vessel through a secondary separator (54) for further separation of particulate matter from the liquid. The discharge of the secondary separator is conducted to a third vessel (C). A fourth pump (66) transfers liquid from the third vessel through a tertiary separator (68) for yet further separation of particulate matter from the liquid. The discharge from the tertiary separator is conducted to a fourth vessel (D). The vessels communicate via overflow weirs (98, 100, 102) so designed as to provide a balanced liquid flow through the apparatus. A fifth pump (84) transfers cleaned liquid from the fourth vessel back to the basin.

|
