A sewing machine attachment can be secured to a motion mechanism in the machine bed after opening part of the bed. A connecting arm extends into the bed through the opening into engagement with the mechanism when a lock lever(43) is moved to lock the attachment to the bed, and is disengaged when the lever is unlocked. The attachment is e. g. a trimming, buttonholing or monogramming unit. The lever is pref. 3-armed with one arm for manual operation and a latching arm with a cam surface to engage an eccentric shaft horiaontally mounted on the bed and adjustable to inhibit idle movement of the attachment frame(40).
