The residue remaining from the dehydration of α-methylbenzyl alc.(I) in styrene manuf. is subjected to a 2-stage distn. to recover II. Thus, 700g residue from the dehydration of I contg. 8 % monomeric constituents was distd.˜lh at 190-225≦̸C/50min at a refiux ratio of 10 1. The residue was then distd. at atm. pressure while raising the reflux ratio from2 : 1 to 50 : 1 in order to crack the crack the polymeric materials in the distn. flask. After 20 hr, the temp. of the distillate increased to 140-5≦̸C and the temp. in the flask was 315-60≦̸C. In this way 54 % of the residue was recovered as distillate contg. 40 % II and II precursors.
