PURPOSE:To efficiently remove soot from exhaust gas, by causing corona discharge in the exhaust gas to electrify the soot particles to increase the size of each soot particle and thereafter conducting the exhaust gas through a cyclone and a filter. CONSTITUTION:The exhaust gas of a diesel engine A enters into an electrification chamber 1 through a pipe 111. The soot in the exhaust gas is electrified by corona discharge caused between a center electrode 12 and an outer wall 11. The electrified soot particles cohere to a larger size. The exhaut flow is then introduced into a cyclone chamber 2 through a passage 112 so that only the size-increased soot particles are conducted into an exhaust gas recycle pipe through a central exhaust hole 24 by centrifugal separation. After the size-increased soot particles are caught on a filter 3, the exhaust gas is released to the atmosphere through a chamber B, from which a required quantity of exhaust gas is recycled. A valve 34 may be provided at the upstream side of the filter 3, if necessary, to change the ratio of the exhaust gas flowing out of the central hole 24 to that flowing into the filter 3. |
