A zigzag sewing machine(I) has an electric motor(6) driving a rotary main shaft(2) to longitudinally reciprocate a needle bar(19) and controlled by a manual element, a pattern selector manually operated before starting the machine to control bar lateral oscillation, and a positioned to stop the shaft with the needle up. The selector is connected to the positioner to actuate the positioner in relation to the initial operation of the selector with the needle down, so that pattern selection is always effected with the needle up. The connection is a cam operated by manual operation of the selector and actuating the positioner.
