Protein-rich product by aerobic fermentation of cellulose pastes - using the fungi Chaetomium cellulolyticum with synthetic or animal waste nutritive medium

Increasing the protein content of industrial cellulosic pastes contg. at least 10 wt.% of cellulose (based on the dry materials) comprises (a) aerobic fermentation of the cellulosic materials in the form of particles (pref. less than 5 mm) in a sterile soln. of non-carbonaceous nutritive elements, using a Chaetomium cellulolyticum culture at pH 5-7 and at 30-45 deg.C for sufficient time to allow the fungi to sprout and form a solid mass comprising at least 5 wt.% of the fungi (based on dry materials) and the residue of the non-fermented cellulosic material and (b) sepn. of the solid mass from the fermentation medium. Used for prodn. of microbial biomasses, suitable for use as human and animal feeds.
