Branch fitting for pipeline - has pipe socket with bevel and ring to prevent ingress of weld material

The cylindrical fitting (2) has a pipe socket (4) with a bevel (8) leading to a reduced diameter ring (16). The ring fits an aperture (54) in a header pipe (52) and the fitting is secured by a weld (50). The bevel (8) is contoured to fit a curved surface of larger diameter than the pipe but lying in the middle of the range of diameters to be used. The ring prevents penetration of the weld material to the interior of the pipe and projects inwards to a small extent in the case shown. When the diameter of the pipe is greater than that which the contoured bevel fits, the weld ring still prevents weld penetration without requiring excessive weld thickness.
