When winding slit strips next to one another onto a reel, different coil diameters and hence different coiling rates and tensions arise due to deviations in thickness. The thick strips are wound too tightly and the thin strips too loosely. To keep the tension of individual slit strips or of a broad strip constant, a braking device is arranged ahead of the reel. A multiplicity of air-permeable rings (3) are mounted on a fixed shaft (4). The rings (3) are secured against axial displacement. The shaft (4) has a bore (11) to which can be connected a vacuum generator (12) which acts on the individual rings (3) via annular slots (14) in the supporting shaft (4) and generates a braking torque. The vacuum propagates via holes (15) in the rings (3) and holds the slit strips (1) tightly against the rings (3). Facings (16) with a high coefficient of friction on the rings increase adhesion. The friction coefficient of the slit strips (1) in relation to the rings is greater than the coefficient of friction of the rings in relation to the shaft (4), with the result that slit strips are fed to the reel at the same strip tension. <IMAGE>
