A surface-reducing and sawing unit for working tapering trunks (10) possesses two reducing discs (11, 12) which can each be moved independently outwards from the centre line (CL) of the unit by an associated positioning device (31, 32) when, in an electronic evaluation and control unit (100), as a result of data fed in about the particular trunk, it is calculated that the production of a useable additional outer board (16', 17) is thereby made possible. Otherwise, no outward movement takes place, and the entire wood, which would otherwise be sawn up into outer boards, is immediately comminuted to form chips. The invention is suitable for use in saw mills. <IMAGE>
