<p>A heavy base with stabilising fins at the edges, is submerged at sufficient depth to be in calm water. The base carries a vertical column and an enclosure, floating on the water surface, slides up and down this column as the waves rise and fall. The relative motion is used to drive an electric generator, or pumps, to convert the mechanical motion to a convenient energy form. The appts. is designed to float above the sea bed and is anchored to the sea bed by a chain, fixed at one end to the lower end of the vertical column, and at the other to a spike driven into the seabed. The length of the chain is such as to allow the appts. to rise with the tide.</p> |
