A method of producing vinylaromatic compounds by catalytic dehydrogenation of the corresponding alkylaromatic compounds wherein the accumulation of carbonaceous deposits in the feed/effluent heat exchanger (16) through which the alkylaromatic feed is passed before it is introduced into the dehydrogenation reaction zone (22) is eliminated, and apparatus for carrying out said method. The catalyst is regenerated by treatment with superheated steam and while the flow of alkylaromatic compound through the heat exchanger (16) is interrupted it is replaced by a flow of superheated steam.
