A current-limiting fast-action switch has two contact arms (1, 2) which can move with respect to one another and are pressed against one another with the aid of a charged force store (20, 44) in order to produce a contact force, and has a device by means of which the contact arms (1, 2) can be operated above a predetermined limiting value of the switching-off current. In the case of this fast-action switch, the minimum contact movement which is required for extinguishing the switching-off arc is intended to be achieved in the shortest possible time. This is achieved in that at least one of the contact arms (1, 2) is held by a locking device whose bolt (29, 30) cancels this locking above a predetermined value of the switching-off current so that the electrodynamic force operates this contact arm (1, 2), but can also be achieved in that both contact arms (1, 2) are moving, are switched off without locking and have approximately the same dimensions. Such a switch is primarily suitable for use as a high-power circuit breaker for high rated-current intensities. <IMAGE>
