<p>Derivs. of formula (I): (where one of R1 and R2 is H or lower alkyl and the other is NO2; R3 is lower alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkyl-sulphonyl-alkyl or aminoalkyl; R4 is O or S; X is CO and R5 is lower alkoxy, NH2 or mono- or di(lower alkyl)-amino or X is CS, SO or SO2 and R5 is lower alkyl, aryl, NH2 or mono- or di-(lower alkyl)-amino; and "alk" is lower alkylene with 2-4 C-atoms in the alkylene chain) (e. g. 1-(methyl-thiocarbamoyl)-2-oxo-3-(1-methyl-5-nitro-2-imidazolyl)-- tetrahydroimidazole) and their salts and N-oxides are new cpds. They may be prepd. e.g. by reacting a cpd. of formula (II) (where Z is a reactive esterified or etherified hydroxy gp., a free or etherified mercapto group, an ammonium gp. or a sulphonyl gp.) with a cpd. of formula (III). (I) are antimicrobial and anthelmintic agents active against bacteria (esp. gram-negative bacteria), protozoa and worms such as trichomonads, schistosomes, coccidia and, especially, amoebae. (I) may thus be used for therapeutic purposes, as animal feed additives, and for protecting organic materials against microbial degradation.</p> |
