The present invention relates to a process for the biological treatment of waste water (effluent) which contains biologically degradable substances in high concentrations in the presence of activated sludge, in which the activated sludge/waste water mixture, after the biological treatment, is concentrated to activated sludge concentrations greater than approximately 30 g of dry matter/l and, by returning a quantity of the concentrated activated sludge to the activation tank sufficient to establish in this a concentration of above 12.5 g of dry matter/l.
