The belt tensioning system for a band grinding machine includes a perforated driving roller (10) around which the belt (14) travels with a large angle of lap, acting as a suction roller. The portion of the periphery of the roller which is not covered by the belt has the holes (20) covered by a fixed plate (22) to prevent loss of suction force. This plate forms the inner part of a side plate (24) which forms part of the roller. This plate has a boss housing a ball bearing (26) supporting a boss (28) projecting inwards from the other half of the roller. Between the fixed plate and the perforated periphery is a narrow gap (32). The side part has a hole (34) for connecting a suction line.
