<p>A digestion reactor for sewage sludge is constructed as a horizontal rotating drum (2), which is subdivided into cells (12) by corotating or stationary transverse walls (13). To further transport the material from cell to cell, transfer apparatuses are provided which have paddles (17) arranged in front of throughways (16) in, or externally on, the transverse walls or have a drag chain conveyor running above the stationary transverse walls interacting with a bridge slidable from cell (12) to cell (12). Between the corotating transverse walls (13) and the drum wall (4), an annular throughway (15) is left free and is bridged by mounting bridges (14) for the transverse walls (13). The stationary transverse walls are arranged on a shared support structure supported outside the rotating drum. The rotating drum (2) is perforated, specifically in annular rows between thermally insulating sleeves (6).
