PURPOSE:To economically conduct electrolytic operation at high current density and low voltage by using electrodes of a specified shape formed with expanded metals when an aqueous alkali chloride soln. is electrolyzed in a diaphragm system electrolytic cell. CONSTITUTION:When an aqueous NaCl soln. or the like is electrolyzed in a diaphragm system electrolytic cell provided with a cation exchange membrane as the diaphragm, a cathode and an anode formed with expanded metals are used. Ti for the anode and Fe, Ni or stainless steel for the cathode are one-side or both-side flattened by rolling to <=60% of the original apparent thickness of the expanded metal, and the electrodes have 20-50% opening rate. Since both sides of the electrodes are free from a corner because of the flattening, the electrodes can be set opposite to each other at a short distance of <=2mm. from the diaphragm surfaces, and economical electrolytic operation at low voltage and high current density is enabled. |
