The invention relates to a valve or regulator based on the free-flow principle. The valve or regulator has a movable valve plate which, when the valve is open, is located outside an approximately straight flow passage which opens into the valve seating area. In order to achieve a significantly higher flowrate without changing the overall size and pressure drop and, in addition, a flowrate/lift ratio which rises more rapidly in the initial stage of opening, two valve plates which can be moved jointly, two valve seats, situated a distance apart, and two flow passages parallel to one another are accommodated in the same housing. In the open position one valve plate is in the lee of the housing and the other valve plate is in the lee of a central web which carries one part of the two valve seats. <IMAGE>
