In a process for separating off dissolved high molecular and low molecular substances, in particular ions, from raw water, which process operates by the principle of reverse osmosis using a suitable membrane module, to establish a defined quality of the product water, an adjustable portion of the permeate flow leaving the membrane modules is returned into the atmospheric vessel from which the water fed under pressure to the membrane modules is withdrawn. The permeate recycling ensures a quality improvement of the product water and is therefore particularly advantageously usable in desalination of brackish water and sea water. Return of concentrate to the atmospheric vessel can optionally also be considered, if in the case of an already relatively low salt content of the initial raw water an improvement in yield is to be achieved. In order to prevent fouling of the membranes by micro-organisms during a temporary shutdown of an installation, an auxiliary circulation is provided which contains a UV sterilisation apparatus.

|
