PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high conversion and selectivity without causing the pollution problems, by reacting a hydroxynaphthalene with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst of an aromatic sulfonic acid and a specific solvent in combination while distilling off the water formed as a by-product to the outside of the system. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxynaphthalene is reacted with an aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol to give an alkyl ether of the hydroxynaphthalene. In the process, an aromatic sulfonic acid, e.g. benzenesulfonic acid or alkylbenzenesulfonic acid, is used as a catalyst, and the two raw materials are fed to a reaction system in the presence of at least one solvent selected from a chain saturated hydrocarbon such as n-hexane or n-heptane, cyclic saturated hydrocarbon such as cyclohexane, or a halogenated hydrocarbon such as trichloroethylene. The reaction is carried out while distilling off the water formed as a by-product to the outside of the system. EFFECT:The reaction can be carried out under mild conditions in a short time, and the catalyst can be recovered and recycled easily and quantitatively. |
