In a telephone switching system, decentralised control devices (TE1, TE2,..., TEn) are connected to a central control unit (ZW) via data paths which are through-connected via the switching network (K) which performs the switching operation. A buffer device (MB) which is used for intermediate storage, code conversion and speed matching in the data transmission between the central control unit (ZW), which also supplies setting information for switching network setting devices for the purpose of setting up connections, and the decentralised control devices (TE1, TE2,..., TEn) and vice versa is also used simultaneously as a memory for switching network setting information of the type required to set up transmission paths which are used for data transmission and which are needed again at the start of operation or after each operational interruption. <IMAGE>
