Viscose is made by a combination of irradiation of cellulose with high energy radiation and alkalisation with aq. NaOH soln. Pref. the cellulose is irradiated with high energy electrons using a radiation dose of 1-30 kGgamma before alkalisation and treatment with 19%, esp. 16% aq. NaOH soln. The irradiation causes preactivation of the cellulose, with loosening of the structure and redn. of the degree of polymerisation. Alkalisation can be carried out with less conc. NaOH soln., and a prematuring stage can be omitted. The consumption of CS2, NaOH and H2SO4 in the process is reduced. Plant investment and running costs for the process are reduced.
