The invention relates to a drive for the work rolls of a vertical rolling stand, especially for billet rolling mills, which is provided with a vertical transmission comprising pinions, output shafts and universally jointed spindles. The object of the invention is to utilise the internal spaces of the pinions and universally jointed spindles by inserting the output shafts of the pinions of the vertical transmission for driving the vertical rolling stand in a way which makes it possible to perform the vertical adjustment of the work-roll casing (cassette) for the setting of the desired pass size of the work rolls for the purpose of pushing the work-roll casing out of the vertical work stand horizontally, and to achieve this with a minimum overall height and mass of the rolling stand. The invention consists in that the output shafts of the vertical transmission are mounted in axially displaceable fashion by their upper slotted ends in hollow spaces of the pinions, the spaces being slotted from below, and are mounted in axially displaceable fashion by the lower slotted ends in slotted openings in the upper sleeves of the universally jointed spindles.
