Degradation of polypropylene by means of azo esters or azo ethers

Polypropylene or analogous saturated polymers comprising alternating tertiary carbon atoms are degraded by means of from 0.01% to 3%, in particular from 0.02% to 0.2%, of symmetrical or asymmetrical azo esters or azo ethers at temperatures preferably above 200 DEG C, for example at 245 DEG C or 265 DEG C. The typical example of a suitable azo ester is 2,2'-azobis(2-acetoxypropane), and the typical example of an azo ether is 1,1'-azobis(1-methoxycyclohexane).
